Şairler Üzerine - Aristoteles (Fragmanlar)
The Fragments of the On Poets
The definition of poetry according to representation
1(a) Therefore are we not to say that, even though they are not in verse, the so-called mimes of Sophron are [prose] speeches and representations, or the Socratic dialogues of Alexamenus of Teos, the first that were written?
1(b) Dramatic dialogues were written even before Plato by Alexamenus of Teos.
1(c) The first to write dialogues was Alexamenus of Styrea or Teos.
2 The form of his [i.e. Plato’s] dialogues is between poetry and prose.
The objects represented in tragedy, epic, lampoon and comedy
* 3.1… eylemde bulunanlar [değil], [ancak hareket edenlerin eylemlerini anlatan (?)]…
* 3.2… tüm bunlar rol oynayanlara yöneliktir…
* 3.3 Bazı şairler trajediyi insanlaştırmaya çalıştı.
* 3.4… diksiyonda ve olaylarda mükemmeli elde etmek, ama terk etmek…
* 3.5 Archilochus ve Aristophanes daha çok insan eylemini temsil ediyordu.
* 3.6 Pauson gülünç temsiller yaptı.
* 3.7… büyük [tarzda] temsil… duyguyu paylaşmak… Sofokles…
*3.1 … [not] those who are acting, [but narrates(?) the] actions of people acting …
*3.2 … all these things [are] with a view to those who are acting …
*3.3 Some [poets] attempted to humanise tragedy.
*3.4 … the achievement of perfection in diction and incidents, but abandonment …
*3.5 Archilochus and Aristophanes represented more human actions.
*3.6 Pauson made laughable representations.
*3.7 … representation in the grander [manner] … sharing in the emotion … Sophocles …
Tragedy is superior to epic
* 3.8 (a) Trajedide anlatı yalnızca habercilerle [yapılır] ve canlandırılan şey diğer kısımlardadır, ancak destanlarda yalnızca anlatı vardır.
* 3.8 (b) Anlatı, dramanın bir parçası olarak eklenmelidir.
* 3.9 (a) [Trajedi destandan üstündür, çünkü destan sadece] trajedininkinden ziyade kahramanca bir çizgiye sahiptir; bunun için o [yani trajedi] tüm vezin formlarından oluşur.
* 3.9 (b) [Trajedi] her vezin biçimini kullanır.
* 3.10 (a) Onun [yani destanın] içindeki her şey de tragedyada bulunur, ama bunun tersi geçerli değildir.
* 3.10 (b) Trajedide olan [unsurlar] da destan içindedir.
*3.8(a) In tragedy the narrative is [done] only with messengers, and what is enacted is in the other [parts], but in epics there is narrative only.
*3.8(b) Narrative must be added as a part of the dramatic.
*3.9(a) [Tragedy is superior to epic, since epic only] has the heroic line instead of those of tragedy; for it [i.e. tragedy] is composed of all the verse-forms.
*3.9(b) [Tragedy] uses every verse-form.
*3.10(a) Everything that is in it [i.e. epic] is also in tragedy, but the opposite does not hold.
*3.10(b) Those [elements] that are in tragedy are in epic too.
Tragedy achieves its function through speech, not song
*3.11 Tragedy may reasonably be thought to have [a kind of] song of its own, as it represents songs to the oboe.
*3.12 [The] composition of nomes, if they are not in articulated [speech], has its end in sound and noises [only]. But since [in tragedy] there are words set to melody, they will have the end of the representation in speech as well.
*3.13 As we say actors relate to the composers of tragedy, and epic reciters to the composers of epic, [so] singers relate to the composers of songs.
*3.14 Tragedy produces its entire effect in speech alone.
*3.15 He manages the [choral] parts and the song with a view to the action.
*3.16 [He composes] songs inferior to nobody’s.
*3.17 The [parts] that are shared belong to the same art.
*3.18 Not even Dicaeogenes composed inferior songs.
